Eva Yi Jiang

This project serves as a community center + culture research center for the Chinatown community.

The site located in Chinatown Manhattan. The area is full of signages of both Chinese and English. The project aims to explore more into the duality of the site and create a space for both community gathering and culture research.

The main body of this library consist of two parts: the spiral, open reading room that also serve as the lobby and auditorium where one can walk up and pick up books to sit at the benches located along the route. The second part serves different functions each floor such as: media room, café, reading rooms, research center, offices and a community garden on the rooftop. Wood slabs and concrete are used for this building, the wood form for casting the walls and roof of the concrete are preserved to build other parts of the building or even furnitures. The composition of concrete and wood also made different privacy of spaces. _LINK library aim to work as a bridge between Chinatown community and the city by its function and the merge of two materiality.
